The VLC desktop media player is widely used and is one of Gizmo’s top recommendations. Earlier this year, there was a substantial cross-platform update of the desktop player that was reported in this article. In addition to the cross-platform desktop player, there is also a free Windows Store app. Recently, VLC has come out with a big update of the Windows Store app for use in Windows 8.1 and 10.

The new version 1.6 has a redesigned interface and numerous bug fixes. A review can be found at BetaNews. An example of the interface is shown in the graphic below. The Windows Store link for the app is here or it can be downloaded via the Store app. According to the description:

VLC for Windows Store plays most local video and audio files, and network streams.
The app has a media library for audio and video files, a complete audio library, with metadata fetching.
VLC supports multi-track audio and subtitles, speed control.
VLC supports all formats of video, including, FLAC, MKV, MOV, TS and Ogg.

VLC app for Windows Store

Whether you prefer this type of app or a desktop player is a matter of individual choice. Personally, I don’t care for most Windows Store apps, including this one. User reviews at the Windows Store website are so-so at only 3.6/5. However, VLC is very popular and the desktop player is one of our top picks so I thought it worth making our readers aware of this new app. In my case, I downloaded it but did not keep it.

I agree. Daum Player is very good with lots of customization.

Vic didn't say which video player he uses but I'm thinking it might be the Daum player which has about every feature and configuration option you could want.
